Yeah, I agree. I'm annoyed that Jack's always right, because in Doctor Who he was kind of silly and fun and not always right. I'm annoyed by people in shows that are always right. Also, the first season especially, they're all "OMG we're on late and we can show SEX and DRUGS and SEX and WHOA WE CAN HAVE AN ALIEN WHO'S ALL ABOUT JUST SEX. OR THREE. we're awesome!" And it's like, really?

Children of Earth was better, though more in the moment than thinking about it afterwards. Plot holes...yeah, giant ones. And I'm not usually bothered by that. But even while I was watching it with some people there was one part where I was just, ok, what exactly was your plan here?

I've only watched one episode of the Sarah Jane Smith Adventures (or something like that -- maybe chronicles?) and it was cute, and I've heard the rest of the series is a lot of fun. It's aimed at younger kids, but it's supposed to be worth watching.

The situation is known and the communication went out to developers. The fix is being tested this weekend, to which we also noted ('numbers may fluctuate, please wait until we tell you the fix is good to go') We expect it to be corrected early this coming week and we will post as soon as it is. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your support.

[url=http://vkontakteonline.tk]Программа для раскрутки групп и профилей В контакте - Viking Botovod[/url]

Really interesting and very informative.

One thing to keep in mind about dollar cost averaging (that most people forget) is that the transaction costs will eat you alive. Unless you're investing very large sums of money (where you get very large returns in absolute dollar amounts), the typical transaction fee is a substantial hurdle to overcome.

Nothing will get done. They've already said so. It'll be very disappointing and worse, we need more stimulus so the economy will actually tank even further. We'll be thankful we took the gains we could while we had all of the legislature. But we'll be sad that we didn't take full advantage of it and we'd compromised less.

That's my prediction at least. I hope more are optimistic :-)

Ditto on the awesomeness of David Stevens. He always has room for "Friends of St David's" in his choruses.

YOU ABSOLUTELY SHOULD JOIN THE ST. DAVID'S COMPLINE CHOIR!!

It's super amazing, and led by David Stevens. The music is a capella sacred music, mostly early English. The choir meets at 7 pm on Sunday nights and sings a half-hour compline service at 9 pm. There are no other rehearsals, and you don't have to commit to attending every week.

I sang with this choir for 2-1/2 years and it was the most meaningful and rewarding music experience I've ever had.

Comment on post Apple now more evil:
2010-04-10T22:07:05+00:00

I've hear others argue closed platform - honestly, that doesn't bug me. I deal with so many applications on a daily basis that I don't want to re-engineer my phone to be able to use it. Even if Apple is a bit of a douchebag, as long as I have a high-quality user experience I don't mind.

I'm more worried about the just announced iAd, where you will be presented with some sort of interactive ad. It very suspicious that multitasking appears in the same revision with something that wants to interrupt you to present an iAd. Multitasking would be required for such a thing, as a reset of your application data would be really annoying. For this feature, Apple is taking a 40% cut of advertising revenue.

I'm now unsure of my next phone purchase. I also wonder if Google will do the same when they can get away with it. They like ad revenues too.

Comment on post health care optimism?:
2009-11-25T13:31:14+00:00

Indeed. When someone is in the middle of a medical emergency they can't afford time to shop around for the lowest-cost provider, so the consumer-driven approach to cost containment doesn't work so well. With layers between the consumer and provider -- the insurance company and the employer -- the consumer really doesn't have much leverage to choose a different insurer or to shop around for different providers based on cost. Then there's the fact that medicine is complicated, and most consumers doesn't have the advanced educational background to understand all the biology and physiology without guidance from the providers. All of those factors make a free-market model not so effective in the area of healthcare.

Comment on post Email to Time Warner re bandwidth caps:
2009-04-09T09:42:34+00:00

Right. Beaumont makes sense, but as I understand it Austin is one of their larger "pilot" markets before rolling it out nationwide. Perhaps they figure that Austin is a tougher market so if it works there it'll work everywhere? Or perhaps they know that Austin has heavy rates of internet usage so they can use it to brag to management about how successful the plan is at bringing in more revenue.

Comment on post Email to Time Warner re bandwidth caps:
2009-04-08T13:31:04+00:00

Great e-mail, Greg. I plan to fire off a similar e-mail to Time Warner in the near future. And calling is a good idea too.

Comments from someone who has very little understanding of how digital infrastructure works, economics, business, or PR (which I guess makes me a math major in the most classical sense of the term):

Here's what I'm concerned about. A few months ago they rolled out (and by rolled out, I mean "aggressively sold") their "Price Lock Guarantee" deal where you pay a bundled price for cable, internet, and phone service that isn't supposed to change for two years. In return, I "signed" a verbal contract (there may have been a written contract as well, I forget) stating that I would keep their service for those two years. If I drop them, I have to pay an early-cancel fee. If they change their pricing on the high-speed internet (which is essentially what a bandwidth cap does), does that mean I'm no longer bound to my part of the contract? I'm sure they've anticipated this issue and either hired a lawyer who can make a convincing argument that no, their contract allows them to pull this kind of tomfoolery and I still can't get out of it, or are going to apply a grandfather rule to people who are currently on the price-lock deal (which for selfish reasons I hope they will do; I'm probably out of Austin in a year anyway).

What really surprises me is that Time Warner doesn't seem to have rolled out any sort of PR campaign to mitigate the backlash they're going to get. These guys had to know that if you mess with the internets, the internets are going to mess with you. So you have to have some sort of message explaining why it's "necessary" to do this (even if it doesn't stand up to technical scrutiny, as I'm sure it would not). I don't hear any of that from TWC, except for a couple of sound bites by top execs in articles in the business and tech sections of the paper.

There was this good quote about how newspapers are being forced to replace print dollars with digital pennies. It looks like TWC is trying to replace TV dollars with digital dollars before those dollars get replaced with digital pennies. Sadly, they are fighting a losing battle. The free flow of digital information is getting cheaper and cheaper, and these corporations and the government that serves them can only engage in collusion and price-fixing for so long before the bubble bursts.

Comment on post what's on my mind:
2008-11-12T10:13:38+00:00

It wasn't the colors themselves, it was that I had to find a tab and click on it before I could see the legend. Not a huge deal for repeat users, since they'll know where to look, but as a first-time visitor it took a bit of exploration to find it. Perhaps make the color legend the default tab instead of the list, or make it an "always visible" box separate from the tabs.

Comment on post what's on my mind:
2008-11-11T20:50:45+00:00

Very cool. I want to go eat lunch in Austin now. One suggestion might be to include a color key that's more visible; one of my first thoughts when seeing the map was, "what do all those colors mean?" An indication of whether 1 on the scale is good or bad would be helpful, too, since I tend to think about things backwards but I never remember what backwards is. I really like the "locality" rating as a way to distinguish chains from mom n' pops.

I live in California and I am voting NO on 8!!! It goes against the 14th amendment to the constitution. Don't forget we voted that english was the official language of California and that never came to fruition.

It is scarry to think that if a majority of voters wants to overturn the constitution that they could.

It is mostly the religious right that is for Prop. 8 and they are using lots of money and lies to attempt to pass it. You wouldn't believe the things they are saying.

If (when) the majority of people in this country are muslums/jews/atheist/agnotics they (religious right) would be yelling their heads off if we passed laws that opposed their belief system.

Thanks for this forum. BTW, this is Joanne Godfrey from Camarillo, California

2008-09-07T15:29:02+00:00

Basically, Salmon connects two random people to each other via AIM, but gives them each a unique descriptor + the word salmon. For example, some person is IMing you as "unfetteredsalmon," and you think, "what the hey?" while at the same time, you are IMing that person as "[something else]salmon," and they are also thinking, "what's going on?" the salmon bot sends one line to you and to your conectee, appearing as if it came from the other person, to start the conversation, but after that it is just you and the other person conversing. If you type in your friend's screen name and your screen name on the salmon site (which I have forgotten,) chances are it will connect both of you and then you can be in on a little dirty trick. That's how I found out about Salmon in the first place.

Something that was so positive and the world actually came together for that brief moment in time. Wish I was alive when this all happened cause now it's nothing but negativity. Here is a movie albeit an animated movie, that gets the message across to a younger generation, who haven't a clue, honoring those men and women. I read Buzz Aldrin is in it too, so can't be all bad. Oh ya, that's right. Forgot. You're going Buzz who?? Second man to walk on the moon!! Don't think he would involve himself in it if it wasn't respectful to the story and most importantly honors those men and women. If it takes a little imagination and humor to tell one of the greatest stories of humanity before during and after our lifetime with three flies involved....Bring it on!!

True, it is hard to generalize based on primaries, but it is also hard to generalize based on polls this early in the race since the people polled may or may not actually make the effort to vote.

There was a wide spread between the number of female voters and the number of male voters. While it would be nice to think that gender is a non-issue, the reality is that there are probably plenty of women who voted to support a woman who would not have voted otherwise. We want them coming back to the polls in November.

And like him I feel like this battle between Obama and Hillary has went on too long and now they are in danger of hurting the party by allowing McCain to take shots at them while they are dealing with each other. Howard Dean should step in and say “Look, Obama is going to be the canidate and Hillary you can be his running mate if you choose”…I know I know that would never happen but a guy can dream right?

Re searching MLS listing yourself or having the agent do it:
You know what you want more and things in the descriptions might jump out at you and as something you didn't know you wanted.
They have likely been going to some of these houses and know that the great one with low price/sq ft actually smells like smoke and there's no way in hell you would want it.

And if you have a good agent who notices things like where the pipes run mean that if someone is taking a shower in the guest bath, it sounds like a waterfall in the master, it's invaluable. (Especially for a first time buyer who doesn't know what to look for.)

I have never had cause to do performance optimization any code I've ever written, ever. Which isn't bad, because it frees me to think about how to architect my code for maximum maintainability, but it makes my game programming classes an interesting experience, because performance is almost all my teachers think about.

*Main> main

*Main> :t leng
leng :: (Num t1) => [t] -> t1
*Main> leng [1..10]

*Main> leng "haskell"

And on the command line:

$ runhaskell A.hs

Or compiled to native code:

$ ghc -O A.hs

One interesting thing about this puzzle is that the matrix could have been a triangular matrix (I don't remember the actual math lingo for a matrix that is triangle-shaped) if it didn't have the feature of one-way crushes, since the other four relationship types are mutual.

Hi,
I will suggest you to not give up on netflix yet. Even, I have been disappointed at my inability to get into the leaderboard. I am always a week too late for the scores on the leaderboard. I am now able to get an RMSE of 0.958-0.962, that would have put me on the leaderboard a week back.

But, I am still trying. I would suggest you to look at alternatives to your current strategy. A plain correlation based analysis(using clustering to reduce finding correlations only for related movies), didn't take me far either, and so I am now trying to use SVD to do dimensionality reduction, and then trying various alternatives.

Suprisingly, some people have claimed that correlation based analysis took them to an RMSE of 0.94ish. I wonder what special trick did they use.

The movie correlations do give good result. I would have been on the leaderboard, but I am a week too late.

Dear Greg,

No one is forcing them to employ homosexuals? Isn't that what anti-discrimination laws do? (just as important -- how does an employer find out that you are gay before they hire you? I mean, some people you can just tell, but certainly not everyone; for instance, back at Rice I was pretty sure that David was gay, but I was slightly surprised to learn that you were. Do you really want companies to be able to fire you once they learn your orientation?).

I really think that it is important to acknowledge that these kinds of laws will place a burden on religious people. An excellent article on that by Chai Feldblum (one of the more important advocates for gay marriage) is located at
http://www.becketfund.org/index.php/article/494.html
It is part of a conference held by the Becket Fund last year; the rest of the papers are also quite good (though a few of them are rather right-wing), and spell out the conflicts which will occur in the coming years.

ps : I'm posting anonymously because I'm on the job market this year, and I don't want google to turn up any pages in which I discuss any contested social issues whatsoever. If you ask me to I'll email who I am privately.

Dear Greg,

I don't usually comment on these blogs, but I suspect that the main focus of "Liberty Sunday" will be the recent unpleasantness wherein Catholic Charities was forced to stop performing adoptions in Massachusetts because they refused to do gay adoptions.

More generally, marriage comes with innumerable legally mandated benefits. As gay marriage is legalized in more and more places, I expect massive lawsuits concerning things like employee health insurance, etc. This will definitely become a church-state issue, as religious groups (not to mention deeply religious private citizens) employee huge numbers of people, perform charity work, act as landlords, etc.

Ask Jessica about our experience registering her car in NY - similar experience b/c we thought she may need to switch her license to register her car which either she didn't or they let that pass. Then we weren't sure she had enough proofs of identity (need six points which if she had had birth certificate or passport would have been easy but those were in safe deposit in Houston). We dug up five but six relied on an expired student id without the requisite transcript - luckily they took it. I hope it taught Jessica a valuable lesson that you try - you don't start out by saying " I know it says you need a transcript and I don't have one with me but....". Also, luckily I had my check book b/c she didn't and she didn't have enough cash. We both breathed a sigh of relief after getting through that ordeal.

Jonathan,

We had several thousand evacuees in Tyler alone, and probably that many more in the entire East Texas area. Most of them are no longer in shelters; they've found either housing or people to stay with. There are only a few dozen left in shelters from Katrina. But now, Rita has brought in even more evacuees. Tyler had a very organized effort to take in the evacuees, so it's been going relatively well. And from the times I went into the shelters, they were well taken care of. Now, I'm actually getting ready to move out of Tyler to a much bigger city. My last day at the station was Thursday. I've gotten a new job as a news reporter at WDRB-TV FOX 41 in Louisville, KY. By the way, is this Jonathan Ichikawa or another Jonathan?

Hi, This is a great idea, but have you considered creating a similar map for people who still need rescue, medical help or are missing in New Orleans? The quote below is from a post on LiveJournal of a plea for help. Please help them by creating a similar tool that perhaps will give Rescue workers a better idea of where people are located. Thanks. Gina

http://www.livejournal.com/users/interdictor/49380.html#cutid1

As demonstrated on nola.com's blog section, many individuals
know the exact locations and WORKING telephone numbers of family
members, most of whom are elderly, sickly, starving, and in serious
need of medical attention. When able to get through on emergency
telephone numbers, a feat not to be taken lightly, they are dismissed
or told that dispatch would be sent immediately, yet no one has come,
even though calls have been placed for days. Many do not require full
evacuation, but basic medical attention and/or supplies. Many are
completely immobile, and unable to access the limited relief sites or
food drops. For more information on these people who are stranded and requiring immediate assistance, please visit

I think it would be cool if you could add a 'tagging' feature like in flickr or with del.icio.us. This way people could group their information into buckets like 'water levels', 'relief point', 'American Red Cross Center' and the like...

I don't know if you remember me, but I graduated from Rice University (Jones College) in 2003. I was on Rice Broadcast TV and majored in Economics. Well, right now, I'm a news reporter at KLTV-TV ABC 7 in Tyler, TX. Of course, I've been covering hurricane evacuees coming to East Texas. Every day this week, I've been filing reports from a Tyler shelter. Today, my story was about how the evacuees were using the free computers and Internet access for email and to look up information about their hometowns. Just used your site from CT to help my family who evacuated from (3) different homes in New Orleans. First good information they have been provided is from your site. You have helped tremendously.

This is WONDERFUL!

Thank You very much! We at least got some idea if my sister's home and business are above or below water - and thanks to the contributors, too.

Thanks tons for the info map for hurricane refugees.

I can't see a slide or zoom feature on www.sciopionus.net. Can you tell me how to zoom in?

Anyway that you can get an updated satellite image??? I can see exactly where my apartment is, but there isn't any information around it. An recent image would show us where the water is, no???

Repeated that process many many times before I got my Roomba. And I don't regret it. So... you figure out what you want to learn from that!
