I love your site. We're in the process of building a science news site to go along with our weekly science radio show "This Week in Science" on 90.3 KDVS UC Davis, CA (http://www.kdvs.org). Hopefully it will be as informative as yours!

I think that mathematics of bridge is misleading. Percents are sure right but those percents rarely tell whole truth. You could bid small slam with 20hcp and keep it. True thing that counts is distribution. i think(not sure) that i+ my p havent had 37 ever but still we have played many grand slams. But who cares. It`s good to see those percents, but one thing you should add. for example more than 0 hcp, more than x hcp more than x+1 hcp etc. Good homepage anyway! keep on good work!

A good overview of Bridge. Thanks. Could you pl confirm/clarify the foll : 1) Pl correct under "Scoring", the foll : "For example, if you bid 5 clubs, and only take 7 tricks, you made 3 undertricks." Should it not be 4 undertricks ? 2) It seems that "cue-bid" and "Stayman Convention" are a sort of 'violation' of the "Responses to Opening Bids of 1" rule given earlier. Pl confirm if my inference is correct : a) Cue-bid related : "Responses to Opening Bids of 1" rule says : do NOT respond at 2 level if the points are in the range of 6 - 9. i) Does this mean that for a cue-bid of 2 Spades, we MUST have 10 pts or more ? ii)If Partner has opened 1 Spades, and we have only 6 - 9 pts, should we respond necessarily with 1 NT always even if we have a 5 card-suit of say Diamonds ? b) Stayman Convention related : i) Pl confirm that a 2 Clubs response to 1 NT by Partner is OK only when we have 10 points or more. ii)This is the corrollary of the above. How do I respond to a (1-level) 1 NT opening by Partner when I have only 6 - 9 points : - Do I pass ? - Do I pass even when I have a 5-card suit with honours ? - Do I pass even when I have a 5-card suit without honours ? Consider 6 - 9 points above as points excluding distribution points (because dist pts are not to be counted for NT). In your discussion of the answer to the above, pl therefore consider both cases : - when additional dist pts are there like void etc. - when no additional pts are there ie, I have overall only 6 - 9 pts. Thanks in advance for yours and your guests' answers. Sundar Krishnan
