Anyhoo, why the poll?

Well, it was prompted by discussions yesterday (which I finally did get to show up on friends pages - it was backdated for some reason). I was also kinda curious how many of my non-gay friends saw "Brokeback" (verdict: very few).

Also as kinda part of the point that all of the Best Picture nominated films were lower grossing than average. This effect doesn't seem to show up here - I'm surprised so many people saw "Crash". *shrug*

I actually would like to see "Brokeback Mountain," but movies are generally pretty low on my priority list of things to do, mainly because I can't get Andrew to go to anything that's not sf/fantasy (and even then, only some of those) or the occasional animated movie. The last movie I saw was Memoirs of a Geisha, and I went to that with a girlfriend of mine one evening when both our hubbies were otherwise occupied, and we couldn't think of anything else to do. At any rate, I may rent "Brokeback" whenever it comes out on DVD, if an opportunity to see it doesn't otherwise fall in my lap.

At any rate, just wanted to say I'm not avoiding "Brokeback" -- I actually would like to see it. :)

That's cool :-) I wasn't trying to be accusatory or anything (hence the lack of comment initially), I was just curious.

Having said that, I enjoyed it immensely...

Well speaking of all the films, you didn't include all the films in the poll.

It did seem that most of the nominated films were lower grossing than average - I think Crash was possibly helped by it not being clear it was a thinker movie and not an entertainment flick (I mean come on, "Crash" - "Ooh, so it's a movie about some sort of car crash or plane crash or something.. that sounds fun").

Yeah, but that would have meant a much longer poll. Plus those two were the most popular, I think ("Capote", "Good Night and Good Luck", and "Syriana" - anyone see any of those?)

Yeah, that's a good point. I guess I was especially not -tuned-in to what movies were out there because the first I had heard of "Crash" was when djedi said he saw it at home.

some sort of computer crash movie sounds fun too!

I just never go out and see movies anymore. And on the rare occations we do, they tend to be Harry Potter, Serenity, type movies.

I have encountered older conservative men who seem to feel that watching Brokeback Mountain would mean they were gay or something. ("Oh don't worry, I've not see it, and I'll never see it")

I've seen "The Wedding Banquet" which is also directed by Ang Lee. Have you? I think "Banquet" and "Brokeback" are the only of his movies to have gay themes. He's such a versitile director! Who would ever expect "Hulk" and "Sense and Sensibility" to spring forth from the same mind?

I haven't seen it, but yeah, he is crazy versatile :-)

he also did "ice storm" which was pretty disturbing in its own right.

I didn't see either, but I've seen sooo few movies...rent with ya'll at thanksgiving was the first one I've seen since the summer.
