Other personal stuff
- My gallery of pictures I've taken
- My science fair project for two years in high school. It's called "The Period of Fibonacci Numbers in Varying Moduli"
- My del.icio.us bookmarks. I did a series on my LiveJournal on why del.icio.us is so great.
- A primitive frontend to my database of books I own, which is of course woefully out of date.
- My old bridge page - hasn't been updated in a long time, but bridge hasn't changed since then!
Other things at gregstoll.com
- A good Beer-Bike jack of Martel. Well done, Wiess!
- Here's the infamous "All Your Base..." flash movie. Funny if you haven't seen it before (or recently...)
- israelhistory
- Another fun random flash animation is the Enron blame game, courtesy of Slate.
- Here's a neat vim FAQ, and here's the official user manual - chock full of good info.
My favorite places on the web
- sneakemail is a great way to reduce spam - basically, you can get a distinct email address for everything you sign up for (and have to give an email address for) - then you can tell who is spamming you, and delete the address if necessary. It's free - read more about it!
- I'm a subscriber of Transgaming - they improve WINE to make it more usable for games. So now I can play more games in Linux, including World of Warcraft and Civilization IV
- I used to be a member of digitalblasphemy.com, which is a place to get great backgrounds (there's a very nice free section as well).
- I bought the CrossOver Plugin from CodeWeavers - it lets me use Windows plugins (like Quicktime, Windows Media Player, etc.) in Firefox. Very much worth it!
News sites I visit
Well, I used to have a bunch of stuff here, but really what I use now is Bloglines as my RSS aggregator to keep up with a bunch of news sites and blogs.
I used to use a Python script to download a bunch of sites and display them on a single page for easy viewing - here's the script if you're interested. It's about 8 times smaller (really!) than an equivalent Perl script I had, mostly due to the object-oriented stuff you can do in Python.
Programs I use and love
These are roughly in order of how much I use them/how essential they are.
- Vim (Vi IMproved) is far and away my favorite text editor. It takes a bit of time to get to know, but it was well worth it. Has a bunch of useful/cool features without the overhead of EMACS. I also use jEdit occasionally - it's a good GUI editor with a lot of useful plugins, like a neat XML one that does validation, etc.
- For graphical web browsing, I use Firefox, and you should too! It has great standards support and lots of neat features. For web debugging, I use the FireBug extension, which is awesome - it gives breakpoints, a console, DOM browsing, etc.
- Python and Ruby are my current favorite scripting languages, followed by Perl.
- For most typesetting things, I use LaTeX - it isn't WYSIWYG, but it's quite powerful, and is useful for writing math papers as well. I've heard LyX is a good graphical frontend to LaTeX.
- I use mplayer to view all sorts of movie files - it's very fast.
- K3b is a great frontend to burning DVDs.
